This is an initiative sponsored by the Cultural Association Arketipos, the Lombardy Region, the Municipality of Bergamo, the University of Bergamo, GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo, and the Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti of Bergamo .
Over the past decade, we have experienced what seems like a runaway humanization of nature all over our planet. Running parallel with this humanization, however, we have seen the evolution of another concept – that of landscaping. This means re-evaluating, reworking and re-designing public space in urban areas through the concepts of ecology, environment and sustainability.
These, then, become places of public art and civic awareness, places where citizenship is identified with and actualized. These places come about as a result of our desire for a space set aside for human encounters, for dialogue; a space where nature intermingles with culture. The desire expands until it invades every area of city and town planning, and much rethinking is called for in a bid to rebuild the communal areas that are a part of daily life.
With this in mind, the Centro Internazionale di Studi sul Paesaggio e sul Giardino di Bergamo (International Center for Studies in Landscape and Garden, Bergamo), offers us the Summer School as a means to achieve these desires. The Summer School proposes to do this by bringing together environmental knowledge, the urban landscape and the ecological city. Using the occasion of I Maestri del Paesaggio, it will transform Piazza Vecchia of Bergamo Alta into a showcase of this applied research. Thus, this public space itself, through collective work, becomes a temporary environmental installation and an area where people can relax and share good times together.
For this reason, this year the Summer School’s relies two-professor team will consist of an architect and an artist. The artist as also been chosen for his capacity to make a significant contribution to GAMeC – Galleria di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo.
The Centro Internazionale di Studi sul Paesaggio e sul Giardino di Bergamo (International Center for Studies on Landscape and Garden, Bergamo), and its Summer School, work under the directorship of Prof. Elisabetta Bianchessi, Ph.D, landscape designer.
